The system has to change.
The IPCC Report concluded that if we are to limit global warming to 1.5 ℃, we have until 2030 to cut carbon by 45% (now at least 50%). We have until 2050 to reduce global emissions to net zero.
We need to reach real zero emissions as soon as possible.
It has to be done in a way that is equitable and just.
Achieving this requires unprecedented economic, social, political and technological changes.
The difference in impacts and costs between every fraction of a degree in warmth is significant. The longer we wait causes more irreversable damage.
The sooner we take action the better. Every action matters, every bit of warming matters, every year matters, and every choice matters.
System Change
Just 100 companies are responsible for 71% of global emissions, this includes sales to the richest 10%.
Politicians need to declare a climate emergency and change the law. Business owners must take steps to divest from all fossil fuels[1]. Super wealthy individuals should be taxed to fund a just transition[2].
The Green New Deal proposal in the US is an example of what all governments should implement. See our own solutions page for more information.
You can encourage system change by putting pressure on politicians. Vote, contact your local MP, and take part in activism[3], for example Youth Climate Strike in the USA, Youth Strike 4 Climate in the UK, School Strike 4 Climate in Australia, the Fridays for Future movement, the general Earth Strike, or Extinction Rebellion.
Individual Change
The richest 10% are responsible for 50% of global emissions. A total net worth of $93,170 puts you in the top 10%. If you're a homeowner, that's you.
If everyone works together to drastically reduce their carbon footprint, collectively, it can make a difference.
Bold reductions are the most effective.
Here are several bold ways to reduce your carbon footprint:
- Get involved in changing the system
- Fly less or be flight free and travel by train
- Go vegan or eat less meat
- Live car free or drive electric
- Switch to a 100% renewable energy provider
- Reduce, reuse, recycle e.g. plastic and clothing
